We have a guest contributor

A little while back, we asked those of you who wanted to spread the good news about West Jackson to send us a story to post. Heck, if you’re a photographer, send us a nice and positive West Jackson photo. Well, we finally got one!

Alexander Robinson, a undergraduate economics major at Jackson State University and a writer for the Blue & White Flash, graciously sent a story to us to be posted on the blog. We’ve already covered the grand opening of Express Cleaners, but we are so excited to have a volunteer that we figured “hey, why not post it again?” Besides, this one is written from Alexander’s perspective.

So check out the story below and feel free to leave some kind comments for this wonderful volunteer. Thanks Alexander!

P.S. If you’d like to submit a story to us, simply draft it and email it to curnis.upkins@jsums.edu. You get a double high five if you send pictures too!

On Thursday January 20, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the opening of Express Cleaners, the first business to open in One University Place, located on Dalton Street across from Jackson State University. Since its opening in October, One University Place has changed the landscape of Jackson State University and added new opportunities for West Jackson.

Kenneth O’Quinn, owner of Express Cleaners saw the right time for a business opportunity and did not hesitate to seize it.

” I saw a need for a cleaners and the development project was the right fit.”

O’Quinn also sees more opportunities as a result of the developments being undertaken by Jackson State. “The university is the driving force for the community” O’Quinn declared.

City Councilman Charles Tillman of Ward 5, the ward JSU is primarily situated upon, agrees with O’Quinn.

“Jackson State is the biggest economic base in West Jackson. A lot of products and services in the area are dependent on the students and faculty from the school.”

Kim Hilliard, director of Jackson State University’s Center for University-Based Development, does not want students to be surprised by the level of activity that takes place at One University Place in the next few months.

“We are now in the process of leasing to restaurants, retailers, and an art gallery ran by students”, Hilliard said. “We wanted to adhere to the students wants, we took students opinions into consideration for One University Place and the type of business that it will be composed of. The apartments that make up the upper portion of One University Place is 35% leased and have recently began offering leasing specials.

Jackson State students are happy to see the development of the area, some recalling a time when shotgun houses filled the spaces now comprising the College of Business, Dollye M.E. Robinson Building, and Walter Payton Wellness Center.

Curnis Upkins, a graduate student studying Urban and Regional Planning from Jackson Miss., envisions future development in the area.

“In ten years I would like to see Lynch Street offering all entertainment, food and services for the students.”, says Upkins.

Ontario Ford, a junior management major from Ruleville Miss., and a member of  Students  In Free Enterprise (SIFE), expects to see a boost in enrollment as a result of the new development.

“The more attractive environment will attract new students as more and more the old is being replaced with the new.” said Ford.

Shannon Hunter, a senior business major from Jackson Miss., sees One University Place as only step one in a long beneficial process.

“New businesses will come,” says Hunter, “and with that, more people and developments,” said Ford.

Express Cleaners  was the first business to take residence in One University place, but more are on the way, as the Jackson State community and business realize the potential the new development can bring into the area.

Best of Jackson party draws crowds to West Jackson

Photo by Kristin Brenemen of Flickr (via Creative Commons Attribution/Non Commercial/ No Derivative Works license)

Do you remember the weather yesterday? Perhaps gloomy, damp, and rainy are perfect words to describe it.  Better yet, how about “good nap weather”? Rain is something that can make an event planner do a fist pump–and not in a good way. After months of planning for the perfect day, rain can leave you shaking your fist in the air and asking” WHHHYYYYY today”!!!

Despite yesterday’s consistent rain, crowds of people packed out The Plant on 80 (former Coca Cola Plant) for the Jackson Free Press‘s Best of Jackson Awards party.  Even better, the #BestofJackson hastag on Twitter shows that not only did lots of people of various races and ages show up, but they also had a blast! Don’t believe me? Take a look at this video taken by Tate Nations:

The Best of Jackson Awards is an annual contest that allows Jackson Free Press readers to vote for their favorite things in Jackson. This year’s competition had 175 categories and West Jackson businesses/residents/natives made the list in 19 categories.

Congrats to all who made the list and much love (and a big hug) to the Jackson Free Press and all who came yesterday to party on the west side!

There’s a new skating rink in West Jackson

Photo by Will Merydith of Flickr (Creative Commons--Attribution/Share Alike License)

A few years ago, when the movies Roll Bounce and ATL hit the scene, it made you want to go skating.  You know, the good old fashioned kind of skating with the flashing lights, loud music, and timid newbie skaters who became well acquainted with the wooden floor.

There was one problem–Jackson (the city itself) didn’t have a skating rink. So those who wanted to skate had to venture over to Clinton or Pearl to get their skate on. Jackson residents Craig and Kavivah Bradley decided that something had to be done about this.

A couple of months ago, the married couple opened The Palace Skate Rink in the Miller Center on Ellis Avenue. This isn’t the couple’s first venture into business. They already own C & K Phone and Tax Services–a business that has three locations in Jackson. This is, however, their first venture into the world of family entertainment, but the couple is excited about the possibilities.

More than anything, they are excited about being able to offer Jackson residents a place to skate within the city.

So if you’re looking to lace up your skates and glide across the floor in the city of Jackson, look no further than the Palace Skate Rink. By the way, I never did get the whole skating backwards thing down, so I may need a quick lesson!

Business Details:

The Palace Skate Rink
Owners: Craig and Kavivah Bradley
1219 Ellis Avenue, The Miller Center (behind Advanced Auto Parts)
601-862-9295

Hours:

Fridays
7 p.m. – midnight, $10 admission

Saturdays
2 p.m. – 5 p.m., $6 admission
7 p.m. – 11 p.m., $11 admission

Sundays
1 p.m. – 6 p.m., $6 admission

Other Information:

The Palace offers an optional  Skate Club membership that allows members to receive discounts on admission and food. Membership costs $25

The venue is available for private parties for a starting price of $125.

WESTerday Trivia Answer: Jim Hill High School

International Baccalaureate Logo

Which high school became the first school in Mississippi to offer the academically intense International Baccalaureate Program?

The correct answer for this would be (D.) Jim Hill High School.

Jim Hill has been offering the International Baccalaureate Program since 1993–a program that emphasizes learning through critical thinking. Students who successfully complete the program receive both an IB Diploma and a Mississippi High School Diploma. Those with an IB Diploma are eligible to receive an extra bonus in that many colleges award course credit for IB courses. This alone gives students a head start in college and less credit hours to tackle before college graduation.

Since IB’s introduction to Mississippi at Jim Hill, the program has grown to include 4 high schools, 3 middle schools, and 2 elementary schools throughout the state.

The advantages of the IB Program are far too many to list on this post, but if you are interested in learning more, visit the International Baccalaureate Organization‘s website. However, two things can be noted: 1.) students graduate with superb writing skills and 2.) students graduate with the ability to critically analyze readings and problems.

If you are interested in learning more about the International Baccalaureate Program at Jim Hill, contact Barbara Hilliard (601.360.2635) or Linda Smith (601.960.5354).

Thanks for tuning in to today’s trivia!!!

(P.S. I’m a Jim Hill High School IB Graduate!)

West Jackson’s businesses offer good deals

Ok, so we’ll admit…we’re no Groupon or Living Social, but there are some good deals going on in West Jackson’s businesses. Below are a few that we’ve recently spotted:

Click this image to view full size coupon. Print it to redeem for 50% off custom framing at Elim's.

A few months ago, Elim’s Art Concepts (1434 Ellis Ave., 601.540.4810) decided that it was time to open a second location for its artwork/custom framing business. The company that began in the Jackson Medical Mall chose none other than West Jackson as the expansion point for its business.

Harold Hart, the owner of the business, called a couple of days ago to notify us of a coupon that is available to any current or potential customers. The coupon gives you 50% off any custom framing order.

So if you have something that needs framing, make sure to visit good folks at Elim’s. To get the coupon, make sure to click on the image above, print it, and bring it with you on your visit to Elim’s Art Concepts.

For more information on Elim’s Art Concepts, check out our post about their Grand Opening.

(Elim’s is also on Facebook. Make sure that you become a fan…and if you’re not already, be our fan too!)

Express Cleaners is now open in West Jackson

Last Thursday, the Jackson Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for West Jackson’s newest business–Express Cleaners.  Located on the ground floor of One University Place, Express Cleaners is the first tenant to open in the new development.  Other businesses slated to open in One University Place include an Art Gallery and an Internet Cafe.

Express Cleaners Manager, Deborah Collins, and Managing Partner, Kenneth O'Quinn

So why did Express Cleaners choose to locate in West Jackson? Managing Partner, Kenneth O’Quinn, says that a large part of the decision was due to the consistent growth of Jackson State University’s campus over the years.

While Express Cleaners is a drop-off site for laundry (meaning the actual cleaning isn’t done on site), the business promises that items in by 9:00 a.m. will by ready by 5:00 p.m. Also, if you can’t stand doing laundry, they offer a “Fluff & Fold” special in which you can bring your loads of dirty clothes to Express Cleaners, and they will wash, dry, and neatly fold the clothes for you (P.S.: placing the clothes in your dresser drawers is still up to you!). The cost for this service $2.50 per pound.

So if you’re looking to get your clothes smelling and looking fresh, feel free to give Express Cleaners a try. They are located near the corner of Dalton St. and John R. Lynch Street, across from the JSU Student Center (the business actually fronts Dalton St).

Express Cleaners Price List (NOTE: Prices subject to change):

Dry Clean Prices

Laundry Prices (don’t forget about the $2.50/lb. Fluff & Fold special)

Household Prices

Express Cleaners’ operating hours are as follows:

Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m.

Saturday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Sunday, CLOSED

Other West Jackson Dry Cleaners include:

Hallmark Cleaners (Westland Plaza, 801 Ellis Avenue)

Buckley’s Cleaners (4122 Highway 80 W)

Another WESToration Event

Another WESToration event takes place this Saturday, January 29, at 9:30 a.m. at Koinonia Coffee House. Call 601.979.2255 to RSVP.

In case you haven’t heard, our first WESToration event in November was such a success that we’ve decided to do it again! Make sure to join us this Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Koinonia Coffee House for the second installment of WESToration (which includes a trolley tour of West Jackson).

What is WESToration? Well we’re glad you asked! It’s a program that allows qualified applicants to purchase a house here in West Jackson and make it your own through renovations of your choice. The end result? A home for you with the character and quality for which others pay hundreds of thousands of dollars. You, however, get such a home a fraction of the price!

Buying in West Jackson not only allows you to purchase a home for less; it also allows you to be environmentally friendly by saving existing homes instead of using the earth’s resources to build new ones. Plus, if you work downtown, living in West Jackson places you adjacent to the workplace. That equals less gas for you and more money for other things in life.

One more thing–if you own a home in West Jackson, you can use this program to get some of the home improvements that you’ve longed to do taken care of. Qualified applicants can use WESToration to get that new roof, siding, fresh coat of paint, upgraded windows, doors and appliances,  and many other home improvements that you’ve been planning to do.

So if you’re in the market for a home, looking to update/upgrade your home, or simply interested in learning more about West Jackson, join us for WESToration! Call 601.979.2255 to RSVP.

For more information about WESToration, make sure to visit the WESToration Page on the blog.

Koinonia Coffee House is located at 136 S. Adams Street and can be accessed from the Metro Parkway (near Gallatin Street). Map of location:

Honoring a West Jackson Resident

West Jackson resident, Dr. Alferdteen Harrison, will be a special honoree at Saturday's Mississippi Black History Celebration. (Photo: Jackson State University)

There’s an old saying that goes “there are three people in life: those who watch things happen, those who make things happen…and those who wonder “what happened?’” Dr. Alferdteen Harrison is one of those people who MAKES things happen.

When Jackson’s first public school for African Americans, Smith Robertson School, was slated for demolition,  Dr. Harrison helped to organize a petition for the building’s salvation. That effort led to a massive renovation of the building which is being used today as a museum that seeks to evoke the African American experience in the Deep South.

When the Lynch Street building that formerly housed the headquarters of the Council of Federated Organizations was at risk at becoming only a memory and not a tangible piece of history, Dr. Harrison wrote the grant that stabilized the structure and led to its eventual renovation. And when Ayer Hall, the oldest building on the campus of Jackson State, was in need of a facelift, Dr. Harrison was there to guide that project as well.

Dr. Harrison’s work exudes a statement that history should be seen, heard, and read. Her lectures to many students, publishing of many written works, and saving of many historically significant structures prove this. A woman such as this must be recognized and shown appreciation for her many good deeds, and on Saturday, January 22, such recognition will be given.

Connecting the Dots Foundation and New Horizon Ministries will host a Mississippi Black History Celebration tomorrow, January 22, and will feature two events. The first event will take place at 9 a.m. in Rose E. McCoy Auditorium and is entitled “Black History with a Mission: From Africa to America”. This session will feature speeches and performances by former Mississippi Governor William Winter, Jim Hill High School Choir, Ballet Magnificat!, Mississippi School of the Arts Chorale, and various veterans of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement. This segment of the celebration is free and open to the public.

At 7 p.m., the celebration will feature the International African Ball at the Jackson Convention Complex. The special honoree for the ball is the aforementioned West Jackson resident, Dr. Alferdteen Harrison.

Other notable figures/groups to receive recognition include Mississippi Representative Alyce Clarke, Dr. John Perkins (both are West Jackson residents), Oleta Garrett Fitzgerald, Reverend Rims Barber, Dr. Dolphus Weary, Owen Brooks, Attorney Constance Slaughter, Flonzie Brown Wright, Reverend John E. Cameron, Sr., and the M.W. Stringer Grand Lodge (Masonic Temple). Entertainment will be provided by the Russell Thomas Musical Experience.

Tickets for the International African Ball are $50 and can be purchased both BeBop Record Shop locations, the Coliseum Box  Office, and New Horizon Bookstore.

For more information on this celebration, call 601.813.5045.

P.S. Event sponsors include Liberty Bank, WLBT, NISSAN, Mid-Delta Home Health & Hospice, and Jackson State University.

WESTerday Trivia Answer: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King pictured here in Jackson, MS during Medgar Evers's funeral. The buildings in the background appear to be the COFO Headquarters and Streamline Cafe located on John R. Lynch St.

Which Civil Rights Movement icon founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (one of the organizations involved in West Jackson-based COFO) and in 1963, visited the Masonic Temple on John R. Lynch Street to attend Medgar Evers’s funeral?

Well, on Monday, we celebrated a national holiday for this iconic figure; so in the spirit of celebration, today’s answer is none other than (b.) Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I honestly don’t have to go into detail about Dr. King. He has become the face of the civil rights movement. However, many were involved in the movement including the aforementioned Medgar Wiley Evers–the NAACP field secretary who had an office in the Masonic Temple at 1072 John R. Lynch Street. (NOTE: Rest assured that Medgar Evers name will appear as a WESTerday question in the very near future!)

Dr. King was in attendance at Evers’s funeral, but, as founder of the SCLC, he also made other appearances in West Jackson. Namely, he visited the volunteers and staff of the Council of Federated Organizations in 1964. COFO was an umbrella organization that combined the efforts of the NAACP, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), SCLC, and various other groups into one organization. For more on COFO, make sure check out the WESTerday post for COFO.

Photographs of his visit to COFO can be found at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History’s Reading Room, courtesy of another civil rights activist, Reverend Ed King (no relation to Martin Luther King, Jr.).

Thanks for participating in today’s WESTerday Trivia. Until next time! Love, peace, and SOUUUULLLLLL!
