The event at Jackson State is being brought to Mississippi by the Library of Congress along with the Margaret Walker Center, the Mississippi Arts Commission, the Mississippi Humanities Council, the Mississippi Library Commission, the Mississippi Center for the Book, and the National Center for the Book.

“The Mississippi Arts Commission is proud to play a part in bringing Natasha home to share a small snippet from her amazing body of work on the campus of Jackson State University,” stated Malcolm White, Arts Commission Director. “Natasha is an inspiration to us all and I encourage everyone to take time to learn why the honor of U.S. Poet Laureate, as well as Mississippi Poet Laureate, was bestowed upon her.”

Natasha is the author of four poetry collections, including Thrall (2012); Native Guard(2006), winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry; Bellocq’s Ophelia (2002); andDomestic Work (2000). Trethewey is also the author of a nonfiction book, Beyond Katrina: A Meditation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast (2010).

Born in Gulfport, Miss., in 1966, Trethewey earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Georgia, a M.A. in poetry from Hollins University, and a M.F. A. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. From 2005-06, she was appointed the Lehman Brady Joint Chair Professor of Documentary and American Studies at Duke University and

Trethewey’s other honors include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Study Center, and the Bunting Fellowship Program of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard. give your candidate a boost by voting today. Polls close at 7 p.m.

Photo by Lars Christopher Nøttaasen. Creative Commons attribution license.

We wanted to make sure that you all were aware of the recently announced prayer vigil for James Craig Anderson–a man whose death was featured on CNN this week and who was the victim of an alleged hate crime. The press release can be found below:

On Sunday, August, 14th 2011, at 7pm various civic groups, religious congregations, concerned citizens and leaders will be gathering on behalf of the hate crime against Mr. Anderson that occurred in late June in our community. The purpose of this vigil will demonstrate a call to forgiveness and peace for our city and to denounce the hate crimes brought to this neighborhood. The planning of this vigil was created by the neighborhood associations in West Jackson who were shocked and deeply distressed over this act. We are pleased with the support of dozens of organizations including some of the following:

New Horizon International Ministries
Beth Israel
Pine Lake Church
NAACP
Capitol Neighbors Association

This vigil will begin at New Horizon International Ministries (1block)away from the site of the crime. We will park, walk to the site, and pray. We are asking the members of the media to assist in bringing awareness to the greater community.

Public invited to Hinds County branding exercise

Photo by Rupert Ganzer (loop_oh) of Flickr Creative Commons

Believe it or not, brands are powerful. In fact, they are so powerful that the successful brands names are often used in place of the actual product. Need an adhesive bandage? Ask someone to give you a Band-Aid. Need a single sheet of very soft tissue? I’m sure that you’ll reach for a Kleenex. Oh, and when someone asks you for information that could be found on the internet, surely you’ll ask them to “Google” it.

The same works for the places we choose to live. The only difference is that instead of a brand, it’s more commonly a sense of place–meaning that those who live in the community tell the positive stories of an area and those who visit know the story.

The Hinds County Economic Development Authority is in the process of crafting a brand for Hinds County, and quality craftsmanship depends upon your input. This week, they’ll host a series of meetings that will allow Hinds County residents to chime in on what what elements should be used in creating the brand. HCEDA has contracted with Greenville, SC-based planning firm, Arnett-Muldrow & Associates, to conduct the process.

The end result of this exercise should be a brand that will assist Hinds County and its municipalities in developing marketing programs to assist in their economic development efforts.

If you’re interested in participating, feel free to attend one of the following sessions:

Wednesday, July 20:

12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., Clinton Visitor’s Center, 1300 Pinehaven Road, Clinton, MS

3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.,  Terry Community Center, Cunningham Street @ Village Square, Terry, MS

5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Eudora Welty Library, 300 N. State Street, Jackson, MS

Thursday, July 21:

8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., Eagle Ridge Conference Center( Auditorium), 1500 Raymond Lake Road,  Raymond, MS

12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., Charles Tisdale Public Library, 807 E. Northside Drive, Jackson, MS

The week will end with a Presentation Meeting of the brand outline on Friday, July 22, from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. at the Mississippi eCenter’s Oklahoma Room (1230 Raymond Road).

Questions regarding the process can be directed to the Authority at (601) 353-6056.

Get outside this Saturday with these two events

If you’re looking to bask in the full glory on the sun’s Vitamin D, then here are two events for you to attend tomorrow:

Politix in the Park

Surely you’ve seen the many political signs that have been posted around the metro. True, they’re not too pretty…but they also don’t say much. Don’t pick a candidate based on who has the most signs! Take an opportunity Saturday to speak directly with those running for office during Politix in the Park.

The event takes place at Koinonia Coffee House and offer free food as well as space jumps, face painting, and space jumps for the kids. Koinonia will also offer refreshments for sale, and if you haven’t been there before you should definitely try an Iced Major (caramel & chocolate iced coffee).

Event organizers announced that over one dozen candidates have confirmed their attendance.

Politix in the Park starts at 11 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m.

NOTE: If you’re interested in volunteering to help with this event, a volunteer meeting will be held tonight at 6 p.m. at Koinonia Coffee House (136 S. Adams St.).

West Jackson Summer Festival

Photo by Flare of Flickr (Creative Commons)

Came across an announcement about this event this morning via the Clarion Ledger:

The West Jackson Summer Festival offers hip-hop, blues and gospel at Sheppard Park. It’s free and the fun starts [Saturday] at 9 a.m.

Someone also tweeted about the event:

Unfortunately, that’s the only information we have about the Summer Festival, but if you’re looking for something to do Saturday, swing on by and check it out. Sheppard Park is located on Hattiesburg Street near Jim Hill High School.

Money Management Workshops to be offered for FREE at JSU

Image by Ken Teegardin of Flickr (http://www.SeniorLiving.Org)

Your dollar says it can’t take any more. With energy costs rising on one side and food costs rising on the other side, your poor dollar is on the verge of being stretched to brokenness. Nevertheless, relief is available.

Some money problems are the result of forces that are beyond our circumstances. Others, however, are the result of poor money management. It is within this money management that you can save your overstretched dollar.

That is why the Center for University-Based Development at Jackson State University invites you to participate in a series of free workshops on budgeting, credit repair, payday lending, home ownership, and investments. The first workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 31 at 12 noon in the JSU Student Center (Ballroom A, corner of John R. Lynch and Dalton Streets).

Tuesday’s workshop will feature Amia D. Edwards, financial specialist with CredAbility, and will focus on the keys to financial success.

These workshops are free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided; however, you are strongly encouraged to register by calling (601) 979-2255 by Friday, May 27.

P.S. This blog is one of the efforts of JSU’s Center for University-Based Development.
