WESTerday Trivia Answer: David Banner
Which Grammy-winning rapper/producer/actor grew up in The Queens and is a graduate of West Jackson’s Provine High School? Well, while all of the options in today’s trivia (TrumpCard, Skipp Coon, 5th Child) are native Jacksonian Hip Hop artists, the correct answer is (d) David Banner.
Born Lavell Crump, David Banner began his career as half of the rap duo, Crooked Lettaz. The other half of this duo was standout Jacksonian, Brad Franklin (better known as Kamikaze). Following the acclaimed release of Crooked Lettaz’s album, Grey Skies, David Banner went solo in 2000 with the release of The Fire Water Boyz Vol. 1. Since 2000, Banner has released five albums, including the most recent Death of a Pop Star–an album in which he teamed up with producer, 9th Wonder, and which was released this past Tuesday (December 21).
David Banner returned to his hometown last week to give away gifts to children living in poverty–an effort made possible through his nonprofit organization, Heal the Hood. That same week, Banner also made an appearance at the concert of Big K.R.I.T. a rising national artist who hails from Meridian, Mississippi.
In terms of record labels, David Banner still makes music under his independent b.i.G.f.a.c.e. Entertainment label (an acronym that stands for “believe in God for all comes eventually”).
That’s it for this week’s version of WESTerday Trivia. We’ll see you next time!
