WESTerday Trivia Answer: Mrs. Betty Lyons
Mrs. Betty Lyons came to Jackson, MS in 1961 to pursue her education at Jackson State University. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Language Arts from JSU and went on to get her Master’s degree in Library Science at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis. She has been living in the West Jackson community for the past sixty years and most of her life she was a librarian for the MS State Department of Education.
She met her husband, Mr. Willie Lyons, at her mother’s church and they have been married for the past thirty years.
Mrs. Lyons retired in 2005 and enjoys working in the community. She became president of the University Park Neighborhood Association in 2005 and continues to be a leader in her community. She has planned several events, helped unveil the first West Jackson Neighborhood sign, and most recently garnered support for the Blackburn community garden.
Mrs. Lyons will participate in the Golden Class Reunion activities which will begin with the Golden Diploma Ceremony during the May Commencement on Friday, May 1, at 6pm. The Class of 1965 is trying to raise $100,000 for their class.
