COFO Mural Celebration, July 24

The Office of Community Engagement at JSU secured funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission to complete a mural that represents pioneers of the West Jackson community. On Saturday, July 24, the community will celebrate the completion of this outdoor mural at the COFO Center at 10:00 am.

The mural was a collaboration of the communities that surround JSU that include Washington Addition, Hemingway Circle, and Pecan Tree Park. The artist who completed the mural was Sabrina Howard.

Those selected to be featured on this mural include the following persons.

  1. Representative Alyce G. Clarke, First African American female legislator in MS. (Pecan Tree Park Neighborhood).
  2. Fannie Lou Hamer, Civil rights leader and organized MS Freedom Summer and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
  3. Bob Moses, Civil Rights leader and field secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
  4. Rose Elizabeth Howard Robinson, Lanier High School Teacher. (Hemingway Circle Neighborhood).
  5. Albert Powell, 1st African American florist in community, (Washington Addition Neighborhood).
  6. Mrs. Louise Marshall, 1st African American Bookstore owner in community, (Washington Addition).

    This is so awesome for the people being honored on the mural, the community and JSU! So befitting for the COFO building!
