Stewpot Getting Little Free Library, Wednesday

The Center for University-Based Development at JSU in collaboration with Stewpot, Zoo Area Progressive Partnership, and Repurpsed Projects will be unveiling the third Little Free Library in West Jackson! The library will be located at Stewpot and will be accessible to community members and children living on or near Capitol Street.

The unveiling ceremony will take place on Wednesday, February 24th at 3:30 pm at Stewpot Community Services located at 1100 W. Capitol Street.

The Little Free Library is a place where children can get free books and people can share their favorite books. The concept is “take a book, return a book.” The Little Free Library is for everyone so the books can represent a diverse age group, with the emphasis on children.

This marks the third little free library in West Jackson and each library has its own look. This library was made by Patty Patterson, owner of Repurposed Projects, and it was custom built for them.

One of the Little Free Libraries is located at the e-City Building located on the corner of Walter Payton Drive and Dalton Street. It opened in January of 2015 and over 2,500 books have went out to the community and over 1,000 books have been donated to this Little Free Library.

Another Little Free Library is located at 3615 Jayne Ave and they opened in October of 2015. Since they opened over 250 books have went out to the community and over 150 books have been donated.

The Little Free Library is a national initiative and its mission is to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide. There are more than 35,000 little free libraries in the world.

The unveiling ceremony will include refreshments, story time, and how to use the library.
