IVillage at Barr Elementary

On Friday, April 6, 2018, Shante Crockett, Executive Director for the Center for Social Entrepreneurship welcomed staff, students, parents and visitors to Barr Elementary for the IVILLAGE After School Showcase. Mrs. Crockett emphasized that one of her main goals is to help Barr Elementary move from a D school to an A school.

Robin Kurtz-Lender, CAO for the Center for Social Entrepreneurship worked to bring the program to life at Barr. Robin discussed all of the activities and programs that are in place and how the students are benefiting. She noted that some students reading skills have drastically improved, “Not only are they reading books, some are reading novels.”

Several students from Millsaps were involved with the elementary students, as they participated and showed off their new skills. 4th and 5th graders participated in podcasting, graphic novels, improvisation, and spoken word. The 3rd graders demonstrated their skills in coding and robotics, the 1st and 2nd graders preformed yoga and hip hop.

All grades participated in a silent display of gratitude of expression and appreciation to everyone by holding up large printed signs with the name of persons and organizations who help to make the program a success.

You didn’t mention the several Jackson State University students involved nor the other community members or school staff!
