Jacob L. Reddix Property Listed on the National Register of Historic Places

The Dr. Jacob L. Reddix House was built to serve as the retirement home of Dr. Reddix and wife, Daisy Shirley and was just listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 

Dr. Jacob L. Reddix, who served as president of Jackson State College (present Jackson State University) from 1940 to 1967, the longest tenure of any president. Dr. Reddix devoted his career to advancing the higher education of African Americans. His administration took place during a turbulent period of the civil rights movement. As president of a segregated state institution in the heart of the capital city, he was forced to walk a tightrope between maintaining state sponsorship and controlling student activism amidst rising tensions. Not only was Dr. Reddix a leading educator in Mississippi, but he was also highly active in various community and civic organizations in Jackson, particularly those that strived to advance the city’s African American citizens. Dr. Reddix was inducted into the Mississippi Department of Archives and History State Hall of Fame, which honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the state.

The Dr. Jacob L. Reddix House retains a high degree of its historic integrity. Originally constructed in 1962, the property retains its original location and historic setting within a predominantly middle-class residential enclave in West Jackson. Despite the basement alterations, most of the building’s historic materials survive. Though Jacob and Daisy Reddix no longer occupy the house, it continues to convey its historic association and feeling as an architect-designed, mid-century, middle-class Raised Ranch house.
