Campbell College 

In 1899, Campbell College, founded less than ten years earlier in Vicksburg, Mississippi, moved to Jackson. The historically Black junior college was established by the AME Church and was located on the land where parts of Jackson State University (JSU) now stand. Students at Campbell College, and later at Jackson State College, played a significant role in the local civil rights movement. However, in 1965, the state took control and closed Campbell College. In 2007, in recognition of its historical importance, JSU honored Campbell College by naming its Campbell College Suites after the institution.
