The Ribbon Cutting for Mr. Hezekiah Watkins Drive

On March 2, 2026, community members gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony honoring the official naming of Mr. Hezekiah Watkins Drive, presented by Councilman Kenneth J. Stokes. The event celebrated the life and legacy of Mr. Watkins as a civil rights activist, faith leader, and community trailblazer.

Mr. Hezekiah Watkins, born September 3, 1947, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was the youngest Freedom Rider and became involved in the Civil Rights Movement at just thirteen years old after being arrested and incarcerated at Parchman Penitentiary. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, as well as a faithful member of Cherry Grove M.B. Church.

The JSU Community Engagement team was honored to attend and proud to support Mr. Watkins during this historic moment. This ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and faith that continue to shape our community. We salute and honor Mr. Hezekiah Watkins and his lasting legacy. Thank you!
