Jackson State University’s Mt. Olive Cemetery project wins prestigious Mississippi Heritage Award

Jackson State University’s Office of Community Engagement received statewide recognition for its work preserving and restoring the historic Mt. Olive Cemetery. The project earned an Award of Merit for Rehabilitation during the Mississippi Heritage Awards ceremony, highlighting the university’s commitment to protecting Mississippi’s cultural heritage while strengthening community connections.
Supported through a National Park Service HBCU grant, the restoration effort included the repair and stabilization of 46 historic brick mausoleums and more than 260 markers. Home to approximately 1,400 individuals, Mt. Olive Cemetery stands as one of Mississippi’s most significant African American historic sites, with deep connections to the stories of Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, and the Civil Rights Movement.
The project helps ensure that future generations remain connected to the people and stories that helped shape Jackson and the state of Mississippi. Among those laid to rest at Mt. Olive are Reconstruction-era leader James “Jim” Hill and community advocate Ida Revels Redmond, whose legacies continue to inspire and educate communities today.
More than preserving graves and monuments, the work at Mt. Olive reflects Jackson State’s commitment to honoring the past while building stronger ties between history and community. Through partnerships, preservation research, and hands on stewardship, the university continues to preserve the stories of influential leaders and everyday citizens, ensuring their legacies remain accessible and meaningful for generations to come.
