West Jackson residents recently came together at the Center for Social Entrepreneurship for the “Beautify Your Outdoor Space” community workshop, a hands on learning experience focused on helping neighbors create healthier and more beautiful outdoor spaces.

Led by gardening expert Martha G. Hill (above), the workshop gives participants practical skills they can use in their own yards and neighborhoods. Attendees are learning how to test and understand their soil, properly prune trees and shrubs, select native plants that thrive in Mississippi’s climate, and design container gardens to take home.

From learning the basics of healthy soil to getting their hands dirty planting vibrant flowers and greenery, participants are gaining valuable knowledge and confidence to continue improving outdoor spaces throughout the community.

The workshop was made possible through funding provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service in partnership with Jackson State University’s Office of Community Engagement. Events like these reflect a shared commitment to empowering residents with the tools, resources, and knowledge needed to strengthen neighborhoods and create lasting community impact.
