Bringing the Community Together: Jayne Avenue’s October Fest Returns October 31

There’s something special about a community coming together, whether it’s neighbors catching up, children enjoying activities or families simply spending time with one another. That’s the spirit behind the Jayne Avenue Neighborhood Association’s annual October Fest, returning Saturday, October 31, 2026, from noon to 5 p.m. at Jayne Avenue Park in West Jackson.

Led by Association President and State Representative Zakiya Summers, this year’s celebration will bring an afternoon of entertainment, family activities and opportunities for neighbors to connect. But beyond the festivities, October Fest will also recognize a special connection between the Jayne Avenue community and Jackson State University.

One of the day’s highlights will be the presentation of the Veniti A. Williams Memorial Scholarship to Alaina Washington, a freshman Criminal Justice major at Jackson State University.

The scholarship holds a personal meaning for Summers. It was established in memory of her mother, Veniti A. Williams, a longtime Jayne Avenue resident who graduated from Jackson State University in both 1981 and 1996.

Through the scholarship, Summers and the neighborhood association are helping another student from Jefferson Davis County continue their education at JSU, carrying forward Williams’ legacy and belief in the importance of education and community.

“My mother was a strong believer that a community doesn’t just happen. It requires people showing up, helping each other, and getting involved,” said Summers.

That same belief is at the heart of October Fest. The celebration is about more than having a good time. It’s about creating a space where people can come together, build relationships and take pride in the neighborhood they call home.

Families can look forward to live entertainment from DJ Killa, a youth talent show, a Halloween costume contest, Trunk or Treat, games, food and door prizes. The Circle of Color Book Club will also be on hand giving away books to children, while community vendors share resources and information with residents.

Jackson State University’s Office of Community Engagement is proud to be among the event sponsors, joining local organizations and community leaders in supporting an event that brings people together and celebrates the strength of West Jackson.

Other sponsors include the Hinds County Board of Supervisors, ACLU of Mississippi, TrueCare, Councilman Vernon Hartley, Judge Yemi Kings, Jackson Medical Mall Rotary Club and the Jackson City NAACP.

For Summers and the Jayne Avenue Neighborhood Association, October Fest is another opportunity to remind residents that meaningful change starts with people who care enough to get involved.

As the association’s message reminds us, “Together, we will transform our community.”
